Black Friday and Cyber Monday for Australian eCommerce: Strategy, Tech, and ROI
Black Friday Isn't November 28 Anymore. Here's Why.
Black Friday used to be one day. Now it's a month-long battle. Australian eCommerce stores that prepare like it's still 2015 get crushed by those who don't.
One Sydney fashion retailer went from $50K to $180K in November by strategizing properly. That's not luck. That's preparation.
The New Black Friday Timeline
6 Weeks Out: Plan and Build
Decide which products to discount. By how much. Email sequence. Landing pages. Which tools do you need?
4 Weeks Out: Email Sequences
Start warming your list. "Deals coming in 4 weeks." Then 2 weeks. Then 1. Build anticipation.
1 Week Out: Last-Minute Prep
Test everything. Can your servers handle 10x normal traffic? Do checkout flows work? Are payment processors ready?
Day 1: Launch Hard
Email blasts. Ads go live. Social media explodes. This is when most of your revenue comes.
Days 2-30: Keep Selling
The sales don't stop on November 29. Extended sales, second emails, retargeting ads. November is all sales season now.
Tech Stack You Need
Email Marketing Platform
Klaviyo, ConvertKit, or Mailchimp. You need segmentation. You need automation. You need to know who bought what.
Analytics
Google Analytics 4. You need to know which channel drives which sales. Which products perform. Where you're wasting money.
Retargeting Ads
Facebook and Google ads to people who visited but didn't buy. These convert at 10x the rate of cold traffic.
Live Chat
Traffic spikes. Questions come in. A live chat bot (or person) that answers "Where's my order?" saves you hours.
The Discount Strategy That Works
Don't discount everything 50%. That's profit suicide. Discount strategically:
- Loss leaders (25% off): Products that get traffic
- Sweet spot (30-40% off): Your bestsellers
- No discount: Your premium items and services
One Sydney eCommerce store made more profit with a 20% discount than a competitor with 50% off. Strategy beats desperate discounting.
The Metric That Matters Most
Not total sales. Profit margin. If you discount 40% and lose money on every order, November was a disaster.
Track ROAS (return on ad spend). Track conversion rate. Track average order value. Know your numbers.
